Foods That Help or Hurt Your Thyroid

Hypothyroidism can never be controlled just by changing your diet. It definitely requires proper medication for lowering thyroid levels. But, this is sure that some foods are known to make thyroid patients more uneasy. While on the other hand, some foods may make him feel better and lower his stress levels.

Is there a special meal plan for a person with thyroid disease? No, there is no particular remedial food for this condition, but surely a well-balanced diet, which is in accordance with the food guide by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, will do wonders. Foods rich in saturated fats should be limited.

To restore proper thyroids functioning, it is recommended to eat a mix of right nutrients and more proteins are beneficial. High Protein in a diet is known to increase the metabolic rate of the body. Proper exercise will also counter health issues related to thyroid malfunctioning. So, keeping a check on food, indulging in cardio-workout and eating high protein diet along with timely medication are some ways to cure this condition.

Here is a list of nutrients that should be added in meals to crib hypothyroidism:

  1. Iodine (salt and seafood)

Iodine mineral is needed in making thyroid hormones.  Thus, iodine helps the thyroid gland to work properly. Consuming iodized salt is a solution to thyroid problems. Ensure that your kitchen shelf has iodized salt only.

Even seafood is rich in iodine so, consumption of fish, seaweeds, and shrimp is recommended. Restrict excess salt intake as uncontrolled iodine intake can damage the thyroid gland. Also, cut the intake of seaweed named Kelp which has high iodine content.

  1. Selenium (legumes, eggs, nuts)

It is an essential mineral which helps to activate the thyroid hormones. Its antioxidant nature protects the gland from free radicals. So, the damage of thyroids gland is reverted when selenium-rich foods like nuts, tuna fish, eggs and legumes are eaten in moderate amounts. Nuts like cashews, almonds or pumpkin seeds which are a rich source of selenium support the thyroids patient in reducing its effects.  But too much selenium is bad so keep a check.

  1. Zinc (meat, seafood)

This mineral helps to regulate the TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) of the body. Deficiency of zinc is not seen in developed countries like the USA. Zinc is found in abundance in oysters and shellfish, chicken and cow meat.

  1. Magnesium (green leafy veggies)

This mineral is an important one which performs a lot of body functions. It enhances thyroids function. Spinach, lettuce and other leafy greens are its good source.

Some nutrients that should be avoided in Thyroid:

  1. Goitrogens (soy, cabbage, cauliflower)

These compounds are chemicals which interfere with normal thyroids functioning. Soy milk, tofu, cabbage, and kale are not good for thyroid patient.

  1. Gluten (wheat, rye, barley)

Wheat, rye or barley has a protein called Gluten. It is harmful to people with celiac disease because gluten damages the small intestine. Some diseases related to thyroids mal-function effect people due to gluten consumption.  These autoimmune disorders are Hashimoto’s disease and Graves’ disease. A gluten-free diet is recommended for preventing such thyroids diseases.

Keeping our health at priority, thyroid functioning can be improved with maintaining proper weight and eating whole grains, and proteins. Mindful eating practices and enough rest will keep this disease at bay.
